Josue Ramirez, APCC
Associate Professional Clinical Counselor ( #23192 (California)Supervised by William Kelly, Licensed Clinical Social Worker #86426
Josue Ramirez (He/Him, They/Them) is a queer first-generation Mexican American and was born and raised on the traditional, unceded Kumeyaay Nation territory now known as San Diego, California. His identity, community, and lived experience inform the care he provides and his belief that therapy and the space should allow for exploration of all parts of a person’s life. He is also bilingual in English and Spanish and fully welcomes self-expression to be in either language or a mix, whichever feels most natural and comfortable.
Josue is a first-generation college student who attended San Diego State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He now holds a Master of Arts in Counseling from University of San Diego. Through his education and training in a program that emphasized evidence-based practice, he developed a strong foundation in supporting folks with approaches that are thoughtful, collaborative, and responsive to their needs.
Josue is also committed to expanding ideas of well-being beyond symptom reduction by considering cultural, relational, systemic, and oppressive factors that can shape mental health, identities, and lived experiences. While reducing distress can be an important part of therapy, he is interested in supporting others in understanding themselves, connecting to values, and building lives that feel authentic. His approach is trauma-informed, person-centered, and strength-based. Rather than viewing people as problems to be fixed, he works collaboratively with folks to make sense of their experiences, recognize the strengths and wisdom already possessed, and identify changes that feel aligned with one’s own goals.
Josue is especially passionate about supporting LGBTQIA+ folks, those navigating symptoms of depression and anxiety, neurodivergent individuals, stress management, life transitions, and exploring identity. He does this work because he believes everyone deserves support that honors who they are and where they come from. His own set of identities drives affirming care in hopes of feeling less alone, challenging messages that no longer serve you, and building a self-understanding, connection, agency, and aligned-living.
Approach
Josue takes an integrative approach drawing from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed practices. With these, he may support folks in becoming more aware of their thoughts and emotions, developing a kinder relationship with themselves, and identifying patterns that may no longer serve them. He also has an ongoing commitment to incorporate decolonial and culturally responsive practices to center BIPOC life experiences and backgrounds.
